Happy chickens lay healthy eggs! We treat our chickens like our pets, because they are. Early every morning, we greet them with any fruit and vegetable cuttings from the day prior. The girls spend much of their day foraging for insects, dusting themselves, visiting their nesting boxes, and singing the egg song! All of our hens are friendly and most are happy to be picked up and easily handled. Several times a day we visit the nesting boxes and collect any eggs that the girls leave for us.
Fresh Egg? How to Tell…
Eggs are actually porous. When a hen lays an egg, she builds an invisible membrane around the egg to seal the pores and protect the egg from air entering through the shell. If left undisturbed, this membrane can help to keep eggs fresh at room temperature for quite a while. Once the membrane is removed, usually by washing, eggs must be refrigerated to keep them fresh. You can test this at home with a bowl of cold water. The egg should sink. If the egg floats, it probably sat around for a while after being washed. The freshness of an egg can also be seen in a pan where you will notice a very deep yellow to orange yolk and the egg white will appear to “sit-up” rather than run across the surface like water.
